Our annual Christmas Show took place in Oxford this weekend and was a great success, enjoyed by performers and audience alike. Here are some photos:
Congratulations to our teachers Frances McGahan and Marion Flanagan who have just passed examinations to become Grade Examiners. This means they are qualified not only to adjudicate Irish dance competitions, but also to assess dancers in Grade Examinations. Only experienced adjudicators are eligible to take this exam, so to have two of our teachers pass is a very prestigious achievement!
Thank you to all who supported our Christmas Class Feis. This is an event that we look forward to all year: a real showcase of new talent and sheer enjoyment in dancing. We hope you loved the day as much as we did.
Congratulations to all who danced on that stage: it is not easy to get up in front of so many people, especially when it is your first time performing.
A further well done to our winners in each age group who we feel deserve a special mention:
U6: Portia Ostrowska
U8: Jacob Browne
U10: Drew Shanahan
O10: Hanna Mathieson
And our ‘Most Promising’ dancer: Drew Shanahan
Here are some photos from the day!
Feeling proud of ourselves!
What a tough competition!
O10 trophy and medal winners
It wouldn’t be the Christmas feis without a visit from this special person!
In the space of 3 weeks, McGahan-Lees dancer Gavina Zuccarello managed to win the Great Britain Championship, All Irelands and Southern England Oireachtas. To top it all Gavina also secured the prestigious Over 12 Traditional Set Memorial Belt title at the Oireachtas, just before performing at the event’s Parade of Champions. The highlight during this whirlwind period has to be Gavina’s amazing haul at the All Irelands of 4 gold medals, securing first in all 3 solos as well as the overall All Ireland title itself. Gavina’s amazing work ethic and determination is an inspiration to our younger dancers and proof that hard work does pay off.
Congratulations to our Gavina on her amazing win at the All Ireland Championships last week in Killarney, SW Ireland. She has won two major titles in two weeks!! We are incredibly proud of her. Congratulations also to Niall Forrest who won 2nd place at the All Irelands after winning the Great Britains the previous week.

A lot has been said about the number of teachers at McGL, but we are proud of the loyalty and long term friendships that the school’s teachers share. Before becoming TCRGs, most of them enjoyed successful dance careers with the Academy themselves, and have between them won just about every title, including World Champion! They are now proud and excited to teach alongside Frances and pass on their experiences to new dancers. Several other former McGL dancers have started up their own dance schools, including world medal holder Danielle Arthurs at Reel Eire and SER Oireachtas Champion Ferne Turner at the Turner Academy. Others have gone on to successful show dancing careers, including former World and All Ireland Champion Stephen Brennan, who is still touring with Riverdance but is also a TCRG in his own right.
Frances, surrounded by the enthusiastic TCRGs that she has trained.
Sometimes the hard work pays off with the highest rewards. McGL were delighted to have 2 Championship winners at the recent 2015 Great Britain Championships: Gavina Zuccarello in the Under 16 Girls and Niall Forrest in the Under 19 Men. As you can see from their faces, winning is never expected and is always a fantastic bonus.
