Cancellation of The McGahan Lees annual Open Feis 2020
It is with great regret we have to announce that we are cancelling this year’s McGahan Lees Open Feis, as a result of the continued escalation of the Coronavirus.
A meeting took place with Welling Schools leadership group, and their management team yesterday to review their own contingency plans and as a result of potential contamination of their facilities they advised Schools + (who managed all out of hours bookings for the school) that they needed to suspend all external bookings with immediate effect. Obviously a group of our size and the potential of many people travelling from areas which already have the virus added to the schools concerns. Our hosts did carefully consider their decision and kept us well informed of the thought process behind it, but in the end the risk couldn’t justify the reward (or in their case the hire fee of the venue).
Whilst we are extremely disappointed not to be hosting our event this year we believe it is the correct decision
We appreciate many of you have already purchased flights but this an unprecedented situation that is continuing to develop. Therefore rather than look to seek an alternative venue (which may ultimately cancel on us for similar reasons) we have taken this decision at the very earliest opportunity. We can only apologise and thank you all for showing support to our event and we do hope that the decision helps to control the spread of the virus in its own little way.
Please understand we had already expended considerable sums on flights (and we all know how accommodating budget airlines are with refunds), pre-paid hotel rooms, awards, staging etc etc. We are hopeful that much of this can be recouped or at least transferred over to next year’s event so again this showed we really didn’t take the decision lightly.
We are also so disappointed as this year’s event had the making of a superb competition and from the feedback we’ve received, unbelievably competitive.
Therefore as a result of this feedback we’d like to extend an invitation to all of those dancers who had already paid out for flights and trains (which more than likely will be non refundable) to enter next year’s event Free of Charge. All we would ask is you keep copies of your purchased travel tickets as evidence. Whilst this will probably not cover the entire cost it will at least go some way towards your disappointment.
