John Flanagan Memorial Feis

John Flanagan Memorial Charity Feis 2021

Online Entry Guide

We are delighted to announce that on the 22nd and 23rd May it is our intention to host the John Flannagan Memorial Feis in accordance with the restrictions imposed by the UK Governments Roadmap out of Lockdown.

As you will see there are quite a few changes from previous years, including a new venue for this year only (due to regular venue in Oxford being closed to external hirers). Chelmer Valley is an ideal venue that will allow us to implement the new procedures required and keep all our dancers, families, teachers, adjudicators, musicians and organisers safe.

Not only will it be 14 months since the last Feis in our region but it also the only Charity Feis that the region currently hosts. Hosting a Charity Feis this year is especially poignant given how hard this Pandemic has hit their ability to raise much needed funds. Again, this year our recognised charity will be Cancer Research, a dreaded disease that has hit so many of our families as hard as the Pandemic.

We will be following all the Government Guidelines to ensure we are operating a COVID safe environment. The details of this are covered in the syllabus however the key measure we will be taking include: –

  • Dancers dancing each round on their own
  • Entries to each competition will have a capped number of entrants to ensure we can maintain 50% of venue capacity.
  • Each competitor will be restricted to one spectator
  • Respectfully requesting dance schools limit their teacher’s attendance to one per venue where they have dancers competing
  • Continual cleaning of key touch points, and stages throughout the day and in particular between age groups
  • One-way systems throughout the venue
  • Touch free awards ceremonies
  • Restricting venue access by using pre-competition holding areas
  • Contactless payments were possible

Also, in order to comply with government guidelines, we are introducing an online entry system that will allow us to manage entry numbers fairly and will minimise physical paperwork/cash handling both prior to and during the event. Our system is implemented via Google Forms and Sheets. All those wishing to enter the Feis may access the system via this link:

The link explains the system in detail and from there, entrants may access the correct Form to enter their competition. We do anticipate some competitions being oversubscribed and we therefore also implement a first-come-first-served system with a waiting list. Once the entry form/s is completed, there will be a 24-hour period in which payment can be made. Anyone who does not submit a confirmation of payment within 24 hours will be removed from the entry list and the next in line on the waiting list for that competition will be offered a place. Anyone wishing to enter a competition that has reached its cap will be invited to complete a waiting list form. In the interest of transparency, those wishing to see the entries and waiting list may request access. All entrants are informed of our COVID waiver and privacy policy and are requested to confirm their agreement on the entry forms.

At this time the syllabus is available for teachers and parents to review but the entry system will not go live until 1pm on Saturday 17th April 2021. We recommend anyone wishing to enter carefully reads the syllabus, creates their Google account, ahead of time so they understand the process and are ready to enter on the day as we expect there will be a lot of activity in the initial hours when we make the entry system live.

We have included documents to exemplify our entry forms, or you may see the example system by clicking the link above.

It will be our aim to try and create as normal as an environment as possible, allowing dancers to catch up with old friends, and dance competitively for the first time in a very long time, but above all we will do everything in a considered manner and try to keep everyone feeling safe.

We are pleased to announce next years date:

22nd John Flanagan Memorial Charity Feis – 23rd & 24th May 2020

More details to follow………………………..

Each year, our school hosts the John Flanagan Memorial Feis in Oxford. The feis is a charity feis held in honour of Marion’s father, John Flanagan, who died in 1999 and was the inspiration behind Marion’s teaching career. Proceeds from the feis are donated to a charity chosen by the school each year. The feis has just celebrated its 20th year.

For the past two years, the feis has been successfully held at the Oxford Academy.
